Zurich photographer Ernst Scheidegger died on Tuesday at the age of 92. He was well known for his portraits of the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Ernst Scheidegger was born in Rorschach, canton St Gallen, in 1923 and studied photography at Zurich University of the Arts. He made a name for himself as a travel and portrait photographer. According to the Centro Giacometti in Stampa, canton Graubünden, “This was where Scheidegger met Alberto Giacometti, and he often spent his holidays in our valley.” Scheidegger worked as a picture editor for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper and designed book series for various publishers. Independently, he also produced some two dozen documentaries for Swiss television. For many years he ran a gallery in Zurich, where he also painted. In 2011, the Federal Office of Culture awarded him the “Grand Prix Design”. Scheidegger received the Golden Medal of Honour from canton Zurich in 2013. Here is a gallery showing his portrayal of …
